TCM: Acupuncture, Tui Na, Gua Sha, and Cupping
Joel graduated in 2016 from the International Academy of Applied Health and has been teaching there since that time as well, constantly seeking academic and practical satisfaction in and out of work.
Joel grew up in the Maritimes, and along with his studies in philosophy and literature, plus his interest in the mind and body connection, he found his true calling in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Joel believes that life is a process of passion and labor, and often these themes clash while we feel like helpless bystanders While studying and practicing TCM and its theory, the active connections between seemingly separate investments became apparent; mind and body, work and recreation, activity and rest, wisdom and action. These roots and branches either thrive or thirst depending on their environments and expressions TCM has allowed him to learn these connections himself, and then use them to treat and help his clients throughout their life processes.
Using a minimalist approach to wellness by activating and engaging the systems of the body with Acupuncture, Tui Na, Gua Sha, and Cupping one can achieve a feeling of balance and optimal function. The effects of the modalities reach into all realms of life, and while touching on both wellness and cosmetic health, they can alleviate symptoms of acute and chronic pain, mobility, energy levels, allergies, asthma, sleep disharmonies, digestive disorders, mental health conditions, addictions and cravings, skin disorders, inflammation, aids recovery post-illness, surgery, stroke, or trauma. Within TCM all disease is seen as a product of having “too much or not enough” in the realms of “Qi and Blood”, using the approach of increasing or decreasing metabolic and nervous functions in the body we can adjust our reactions and interactions with our food, peers, and lifestyle to achieve balance and harmony.
Joel loves living in Ottawa and is excited to become a part of Back in Balance and helping the Westboro and Ottawa community reach optimal wellness.

Other modalities can be added to treatment as follows:
Cupping is an ancient, yet effective technique in which vacuum suction
is applied to areas typically on the back to draw out toxins, improve
circulation, improve oxygenation, improve bronchial and asthmatic
conditions and reduce pain. The procedure is relatively pain free and
the results are lasting.
Gua Sha & Tui Na are two massage techniques which apply principles of
Chinese Medicine Meridian Therapy to traditional massage.
Gua Sha involves a painless scraping technique which incorporates
massage oil to break up scar tissues and improve bloodflow.
Tui Na is a push/pull massage technique in which layers of the fascia
are opened along the meridians or channels. This treatment will release
knots in the muscles and clear pathways between the channels and network
vessels; unblocking areas of stagnation, restoring energy to the body,
and relieving pain
